The Build-up Paper

A build-up paper is the formal instruction package that specifies how a dry dock must be set up before a vessel arrives. It consolidates the vessel’s approved docking plan, block arrangement drawings, load-path calculations, and any special requirements, such as sonar dome clearances, stabilizer recesses, or hull-mounted equipment. The build-up paper details the physical preparation of the docking cradle and dock structure—keel block heights, bilge block spacing, material needs, caisson status, pump readiness, and any deviations from standard procedures.
Purpose of a Build-Up Paper
The Build-up paper serves as the link between the ship’s docking plan and the physical block heights that are set in the dry dock, ensuring bilge blocks match the hull curvature and align with designated load-bearing locations.
It also ensures compliance with STD-1625D to guarantee safe support of the vessel.
